A huge body of work by John Cherrington (1931-2015), a prolific but commercially shy painter, has been consigned by the artist’s executors to Rogers Jones & Co’s sale in Cardiff.

Comprising more than 800 works by the London-trained, Hereford-based artist, the collection offers a mix of works showing “everyday life, protests and the absolute weird”, according to the auction house.

One of the highlights being offered on June 1 is this 3ft 4in x 2ft 5in (1.01 x 75cm) oil on canvas of Lord ‘Rab’ Butler, a former chancellor of the exchequer and home secretary, shown here in his robes as master of Trinity College in Cambridge.

Estimate £200-400.

Marlborough in Wiltshire is best known for its wide high street and upmarket school, but it was also home to one of Britain’s finest manufacturers of puppets. Pelham Puppets traded in the town from 1947-85, making high-quality marionettes and glove puppets.

A dozen Pelham creations will be offered at Chippenham Auction Rooms in the same county on May 31, as part of a larger group of puppets being sold on behalf of a private collector from Radstock in Somerset.

Examples include Pinocchio, an Eskimo, a donkey and several pop singers modelled on The Beatles (one pictured right), with estimates ranging from £65 for a pop singer to £275 for the donkey.
