Thought to have been lost, a ceramic sculpture of The Lily Maid by English sculptor Gibert Bayes (1872-1953) has recently come to light, discovered under a garden of weeds where it has been for nearly half a century.
The vendor’s grandparents purchased the 20in (50cm) high sculpture, made for Royal Doulton in the early 1920s, direct from the artist in 1928 for the substantial sum of £52 10 shillings.
Golding Young & Mawer will offer the work in Lincoln on July 18, estimated at £3000-5000.
A National Maritime Museum authentication letter, dated 1980, accompanies a fragment of the topsail from HMS Victory on offer at Cheffins in Cambridge on July 5, estimated at £2000-3000.
The section is decoratively penned Part of the Fore Top Sail of H.M.S. Victory after The Battle of Trafalgar Oct, 21st 1805 above England expects that every man will do his duty.
Framed, it measures 13½ x 8in (35 x 21cm) overall.

Furniture made in the 1970s by the Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson firm of Kilburn in North Yorkshire will feature in Lawrences of Crewkerne’s sale in Somerset on July 5.
Consigned for auction by the vendor from Somerton, the set of eight dining chairs (two shown above) is expected to make £2000-3000, while the refectory table is guided at £1500-2000.

This rosewood and gilt metal open bookcase-cabinet, above, is among 1100 lots of art and antiques to be sold on July 15 at Tennants of Leyburn in North Yorkshire.
The 6ft 1in x 4ft 11in (1.85 x 1.49m) piece dates from the early 19th century and is made in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster.
