In a March 15 auction in Bridport, Dorset, the Busby’s Fine Art saleroom will offer several paintings not seen on the market before.

Among them is a pair of large canvases from the estate of Sir Edward Hulton (1906-88), which have been stored in a container on a farm in west Somerset for the last 25 years.

Hulton was the proprietor of several publications, the most famous of which was the Picture Post. Over the years he supported many young artists, including the two painters whose pictures are for sale.

The first is a large 4ft 11in x 3ft 3in (1.51 x 1m) oil on canvas by Adrian Heath (1920-92) titled Composition Black and Yellow, painted in 1959. It is estimated at £20,000-30,000.

The second, shown above and estimated at £60,000-80,000, is by Japanese artist Hsiao Domoto (1928-2013). The untitled oil on canvas is signed and dated Domoto 1958 Paris 9 Rue St Didier on the reverse and was probably acquired by Hulton during a spell in Paris in the 1950s.
