The 10ft 6in tall x 6ft wide (3.2 x 1.83m) walnut and amboyna fireplace and surround shown above, probably by Gillows for Liberty, incorporated 20 4in (10cm) square Tiffany glass favrile inserts.
Offered at the February 16 sale in Blackburn, the hefty lot with its beaten copper canopy was probably designed by Bruce Talbot and redolent of its time.
However, the suspicion is that, bearing in mind the cost of transporting it across the Atlantic, the New York bidder who won it at a mid-estimate £7600 may have been more interested in the Tiffany tiles than their setting.
