TEFAF’s expansion stateside with its two fairs in New York City is now well under way.
Its latest foray into the Big Apple this month is TEFAF NY Spring, taking place at the Park Avenue Armory from May 4-8.
This is the second edition of the spring fair covering fine and decorative art, with a focus on modern and contemporary art and design, antiquities, tribal art and jewellery.
Ninety dealers from Europe and the US will be standing, 24 of whom are new participants including White Cube, Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth and jewellery atelier Taffin.
Urban design
Also exhibiting for the first time this year is Bel Etage from Vienna, Austria bringing a specialism of Jugendstil, or Viennese Art Nouveau.
The display will include the pair of armchairs (above) in solid beech, pearwood veneer, mother of pearl inlay and white metal.
They were designed by Josef Urban (1872-1933), architect, interior designer and painter, and made by the sculptor Sandor Jaray (1870- 1916) in 1905 for the 17th exhibition of the Hagenbund, a group of 250 Austrian artists formed in the late 19th century.
The chairs will be priced in the region of €300,000.
Among those returning for the second time is TEFAF design stalwart François Laffanour of Galerie Downtown.
The Paris dealership specialises in furnishings by architect/designers such as Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Serge Mouille and Ron Arad.
For TEFAF NY Spring, Laffanour has decided to concentrate the lion’s share of his display on major pieces of furniture by the Parisian designer-decorator Jean Royère, among which will be a bahut or sideboard (shown above) from 1955 veneered in the distinctive marqueterie de paille or straw marquetry.
It will be priced in the region of €400,000.
