Among the highlights of Plymouth Auction Rooms’ sale on May 9 is this near life-size bronze horse sculpture by contemporary Irish artist Rick Lewis.

The 4ft 6in x 2ft 6in (1.37m x 76cm) high sculpture was commissioned by the vendor’s late father, a close friend of the artist, whose dream had been to own a sculpture of a horse in full gallop, with protruding veins, eyes and flat back ears.

It is estimated at £5000-6000.

This 5ft 2in x 3ft 6in (1.59 x 1.08m) multi-colour advertising sign promotes the British insurance firm, Eagle Star & British Dominions.

The head-on image of a vintage racing car speeding towards the viewer, the words Empire Motor Policy emblazoned across its radiator, will go under the hammer in a sale held by Transport Collector Auctions at Dominic Winter’s saleroom in South Cerney, Gloucestershire, on May 17.

Estimate £4000-6000.

The character of Alice from Lewis Carroll’s quirky fairy tale Alice in Wonderland is a frequent motif in the Surrealist creations of Salvador Dalí (1904-89).

Taken from a 1977 drawing, this signed limited edition lost wax figure of Alice, modelled with a skipping rope with hair and hands turning into roses, comes from an edition of 350 made in 1984.

Stamped and dated Jemelton 1984 and impressed with a Perseo foundry mark, the 2ft 11in (90cm) high piece is priced at £8500 from Hickmet Fine Arts in London.
