The guide offered reliable information on French garages, mechanics, hotels and other services that were identifiable by easily recognisable pictograms.

It was not until 1926 that the first Michelin stars were awarded to restaurants, but one sentence in the preface to the first edition proved prophetic: “This guide was born with the century and will be just as long-lived.”

Despite the size of the initial publication run, copies of this 400pp first issue are now scarce and in an April 19 Paris sale held by Aguttes (25-30% buyer’s premium), the example shown above sold for €10,500 (£9130).
