The picture is included in his solo show now open at Opera Gallery’s New Bond Street location until November 9.
Brasilier’s style is usually described as fauvist, emphasising painterly quality and strong colours over representation. The gallery’s Federica Beretta attributes his appeal to the abiding calm she says his works evoke.
In the two years since the international gallery has been working with him, she adds, the response has been “incredible”, with buyers snapping up large-scale paintings that Brasilier has created throughout his career.
The artist, now 89, had his first solo show in 1959 and has been exhibiting for more than half a century. During the past few years there has been a spike in the prices for his works on the open market, with his total annual turnover at auction increasing from around $400,000 in 2012 to around $3.4m in 2017, according to Artprice.
Beretta says that this is due in part to the gallery’s work to establish him on the international scene, using its 13 worldwide locations to stage exhibitions of his work.
Buyers are interested in the artist’s history. “He’s always exhibited but now he has a 70-year career behind him, which is a strong heritage,” she adds.
Works in the show are priced between £40,000-150,000. The gallery also offers earlier Brasilier works produced as early as the 1960s.
