A coloured litho plate from Emily Eden’s Portraits of the Princes and People of India, sold by Bonhams for £38,000.
Containing 28 hand-coloured lithographs mounted on 24 sheets of card and sold at Bonhams (25/10/12.5% buyer’s premium) for a record-equalling £38,000, this was a scarce and complete example of a work that is best known for its portraits of the Sikh rulers of the Punjab. Seen above, however, is ‘A Shootr-Suwar, a Camel Dispatch Rider’.
Also part of that Bonhams sale, and sold at £100,000, was an album, dated of Amritsar, Lahore and other places in India – a collection that was once again of particular Punjab interest.
From 1888, containing some 120 photographs, the album pages featured sketches and notes by its compiler, John Lockwood Kipling, an artist, museum curator and school administrator.
