Antique lenses made by Dallmeyer, the English optical company founded in the mid-19th century, have gained cult status in photography circles. This is in no small part due to their high quality bokeh, the blurred quality or effect seen in the out-of-focus portion of a photograph.

Two Dallmeyer septac series double gauss-type lenses, one shown above, have been consigned to Special Auction Services’ camera sale in Newbury on October 23, individually guided at £3000-5000.

This c.1700 Venetian School painting above is one of just a few known depicting the legendary banquets held by the Doge of Venice.

As part of the governance of the city, the doge held five official banquets a year, attended by senior officials, magistrates and foreign ambassadors. For the latter, this was one of the rare opportunities when the ban on talking to the doge and patriciate was lifted. As the power of Venice declined, these banquets became increasingly elaborate.

This 23in x 3ft 10in (60cm x 1.16m) oil on canvas has provenance to the Earls of Annesley in Castlewellan in County Down. It will feature in a sale of art and furniture by Irish auction house Adam’s in Drogheda, County Louth, on October 16. Estimate €3000-5000.
