The distinguishing feature is that they are packed with small art and antiques galleries offering a cornucopia of paintings, works of art, ceramics, design and other specialities.
The Carré has its own dealers’ association and puts on various events throughout the year to promote the area and encourage art lovers to visit.
It will be a hive of activity early during the rentrée with the launch of the Mois des Collectionneurs (Collectors’ month) on September 5.
As the title suggests, this runs through the month to September 29, putting the rich and varied range of dealers’ stock under the spotlight.
Ceramics trail
And in a handy extra promotional partnership this year, the launch date coincides with the vernissage of the 11th edition of the Parcours de la Céramique et les Arts Du Feu: a gallery-based ceramics trail focusing on the specialist dealers in European and Oriental ceramics based in these streets.
There is also a link with the nearby Hotel Lutetia. The biggest suite in the hotel is to be decorated with pieces provided by various Carré Rive Gauche galleries and a display case in the lobby is also available where the dealers can show a selection of their stock.
Parcours de la Céramique
Eighteen galleries, a mix of residents and guest dealers, are participating in this latest edition of the Parcours de la Céramique et Les Arts du Feu which takes place from September 5-11.
Between them they offer a run through a centuries-long range of Oriental and Occidental ceramic production.
Chinese porcelain for export and the home market, Italian Renaissance maiolica, classic 18th French porcelain from Sèvres and a selection of 19th century creations rub shoulders with contemporary pieces in this network of Left Bank galleries – all located within a short walk of each other.
As in other years, a presentation from a guest museum takes place. Last year it was the Château of Saumur. For 2018 the spotlight falls on the Musée Sandelin in Saint-Omer, Pas de Calais.
Each participant will display a piece from the museum’s collection matched as near as possible to each gallery’s stock.
A lecture programme also takes place at the nearby Bistrot de Paris.
Mois des Collectionneurs
This diameter terrestrial globe on stand in beechwood by Henry Selves, c.1850, is priced in the region of €15,000-17,000 from Galerie Delalande during Mois des Collectionneurs.
The Galerie Delalande is one of the Carré Rive Gauche dealers who will be in action for the Mois des Collectionneurs.
The rue de Lille dealership specialises in scientific and marine instruments, and more rarified collectors’ items such as tobacco and smoking artefacts and walking canes.
Among the stand-out objects for sale is a 6in (15.5cm) diameter terrestrial globe on stand in beechwood by Henry Selves, c.1850, with its celestial casing.
It is priced in the region of €15,000-17,000.
Foire de Chatou
For those in Paris later in September, the famous and long-running Foire de Chatou brocante takes place on the île des Impressionistes just outside the city from September 28-October 7.
