1: The English artist Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821-1906) led a life of travel, art study and painting. This 9 x 12½in (23 x 32cm) watercolour of a North African market scene from the collection of Francis Bate, secretary of the New English Art Club, tipped over top estimate at David Duggleby of Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
2: James Fry (1911-1985), the prolific Dorset artist who lived at his studio in Corfe Castle, travelled the area, often on his bicycle, painting numerous scenes of heathland, cliffs and sea. This 12in x 2ft (30 x 61cm) oil on canvas of Studland Beach, offered together with a coastal view of Houns Stout in the Isle of Purbeck, sold for a multi-estimate sum at Lacy Scott & Knight in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
3: William Miles Johnston’s (1893-1974) watercolours of the Scottish town of Kirkcudbright and the surrounding countryside have a modest following on the secondary market. Bought from the artist’s shop The Crafts in Kirkcudbright, this 15 x 21in (39 x 53cm) gouache of nearby Mossyard, dated 1959, doubled the top guide at Thomson Roddick in Dumfries on September 15.
