The 2ft 9in x 3ft 8in (86cm x 1.12m) oil on canvas was painted in 1851 by John Ferneley Sr (1782-1860) and depicts fellow artist Sir Francis Grant mounted on the horse Grindal.

It was made for Grant’s own personal collection after an almost identical version of the work was commissioned by a patron of Ferneley.

Ferneley taught Grant during the 1820s and on the latter’s launch as a professional artist in the 1830s, the pair frequently collaborated, with Grant providing portraits and Ferneley the animals. The portrait has passed by descent and is estimated at £30,000-50,000.
