At Tennants (20% buyer’s premium) in Leyburn on November 27 a 2ft (62cm) tall letter M from her nameplate was offered.
After the ship was broken up in 1935, the port and stern nameplates were sold complete at a London auction but the starboard plate was sold letter by letter.
A descendant of the 1935 buyer put it into Tennants where it was estimated at £5000-7000 – a sum more than justified when sold at £9000 to a private bidder from the south of England.
