The 13 x 12in (33 x 30cm) oil on board of a cottage in a landscape – possibly showing Kirkcudbright in Galloway where the artist regularly visited – had been estimated at £200-300.

The price is not far off the painter’s £4000 auction record, paid at Christie’s in November 2001 for a similar scene from the Fleming- Wyfold Art Foundation.

At the peak of her career in 1924 Johnstone exhibited alongside Cecile Walton. However, she was forced to resign her teaching post at Edinburgh College of Art later that year when she married her colleague, David Sutherland.
