1 Whose star is on the rise?
In the Scottish world of art, post-war artists such as Joan Eardley are ascending.
However, when we handle a painting by any artist at the top of their game in any period it will sell. The best always win out.
2 What is one highlight you are offering this summer?
Our large-scale William McTaggart (1835-1910) of bait gatherers at sunset on the shore at Machrihanish. Painted in 1907, its modernity is striking and so too its freedom.
3 What is one challenge that buyers face today?
The bombardment of images, influences and ‘looks’ to be found especially online and in print. Finding a focus, period or artist that moves you amidst the tumult is very difficult – but a dealer can help.
4 Who do you admire in the art world?
The collector Andrew McIntosh Patrick. He developed an aesthetic that became synonymous with The Fine Art Society with his vision, flair and eye for detail. I see him regularly and always covet something he is wearing. You’ve either got it or you haven’t.
One great recent show was Chantal Joffe at Victoria Miro. The scale and sheer physicality of the paint stilled me and widened my eyes.
