This Islamic-inspired Art Deco compact by Cartier above is decorated with black enamel and a diamond-set framed portrait of a noble woman.
It contains an inner compartment with two sections for a powderpuff and powder and is signed Cartier with French control marks and a rubbed maker’s mark possibly for Henri Lavabre, one of the major workshops in Paris working exclusively for Cartier from 1906-21.
Salisbury saleroom Woolley & Wallis will offer the piece at £3000-4000 in its jewellery sale on July 18.

American artist Danny Lane (b.1955) produced his float glass and iron Romeo and Juliet table in a limited edition of five in 1985, including it in his first solo exhibition at Ron Arad’s (b.1951) influential design and production studio One Off in Shelton Street, London.
Bought directly from the artist by the vendor, an example is being offered with an estimate of £3000-5000 in a Modern Design sale at Chiswick Auctions on July 17.

Of all the countries manufacturing binoculars for military use during the Second World War, Japan was the most prolific. It is estimated that some 200,000lbs of optical glass was purchased from Schott in Germany during the war, the majority going to the largest manufacturers of Japanese military binoculars, Toko and Nikko.
The Asian art sale at Penzance auction house David Lay on July 11 will contain a pair of Toko military observation binoculars supplied with an Italian Manfrotto tripod. The 10 x 60 (10 power magnification and 60mm objective lenses) binoculars were designed to be mounted on bridges of the Japanese Imperial Navy warships.

The principal contents of Alderley House – a mid-19th century Grade II-listed country house by the English architect Lewis Vulliamy near Tetbury, Gloucestershire – will be offered in a stand-alone sale at Essex saleroom Sworders on July 23.
The 500-lot sale contains a large quantity of Georgian and Victorian furniture and chattels acquired to furnish the 14-bedroom house in 2009, with estimates ranging from £100 for a Victorian wall clock to £2000-4000 for this imposing 10ft 5in (3.18m) wide Georgian mahogany breakfront bookcase, above.
The collection has been consigned by the Day family who sold Alderley House in 2017 and are now relocating to the US.
