An exceptionally early golf putter dating to the late 18th century is a star lot of Mullock’s June 6 sale of golfing memorabilia at Ludlow Racecourse in Shropshire.
The longnose hooked face putter is likely to be c.1780 or earlier based on the head shape and its dimensions. The putter was stamped at a later date for the celebrated golf club maker Hugh Philp (1786-1856).
There are currently just two putters that are recorded to be older: a red keel putter (c.1775) which sold at Phillips auction house in 1994 and a Neilson putter (also c.1775) at Royal Sydney Golf Club in Australia. It is also one of the oldest extant putters not to have had the hook face filed back. It comes in original condition and is estimated at £15,000-20,000.

A June 11 sale at Exeter saleroom Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood will bring together more than 350 lots of pictures, ceramics and works of art across all disciplines from the 20th century to Contemporary.
Estimated at £5000-7000 is this signed 15 x 22in (38 x 57cm) mixed-media work by John Piper (1903-92) of Garn Fechan in Pembrokeshire, Wales, above.
Garn Fechan sits a few hundred metres east of Garn Fawn where Piper and his wife Myfanwy bought a ruined cottage as a retreat in 1962.

This landscape oil of Collioure in southern France above was painted by James Dickson Innes (1887-1914), the Welsh-born painter best known for his expressive paintings of mountains and remote landscapes. It will lead a sale of Modern and Contemporary British Art at Roseberys in West Norwood, south London, on June 11.
The signed 10 x 14in (26 x 35cm) oil on panel was owned formerly by the Modern British art collector Wilfrid Evill, whose collection sold in a landmark multi-million-pound auction at Sotheby’s in London in 2011.
The Innes painting was sold by Evill’s ward and benefactor Honor Frost several decades before. It comes with labels on the verso for the London dealers Agnew’s and the Redfern Gallery, and an old label for an exhibition at the Brighton Art Gallery held in 1965. Consigned from a private London collection, it is offered at £10,000-15,000.
