1 What is one challenge facing the trade at the moment?
I think one of the biggest challenges now is the fact that so many people buy online. That can be a dangerous place, especially for buyers with limited knowledge.
2 What are the highlights of your stock this summer?
One of the major artists that I sell is Dame Laura Knight and I have a wonderful example of one of her watercolours called Powder and Puff (above).
I also have several interesting chalk drawings and a number of etchings by her. I like to be able to offer works at a range of prices.
3 What could you not do without?
I think the trade associations are becoming increasingly important these days, helping us market our goods.
I am a member of both BADA and LAPADA. It is a difficult time for the trade and to quote George Bernard Shaw: “Progress is impossible without change.”
4 Who do you admire in the world of art and antiques?
Dealer John Robertson was my cousin’s best friend in Northumberland, so I seem to have known him forever.
He has undoubtedly been my greatest mentor and he has a wonderfully wide depth of knowledge and expertise with which he is incredibly generous.
He has to have my vote.
5 What is your favourite museum?
I love Tate Britain – wandering round looking at wonderful and important art – and then lunch in the Whistler Room. What could be better?
