1. This typical Annabel Gosling (b.1942) oil on canvas, 2ft 11in x 2ft 3in (90 x 70cm), sold on top estimate at Rowley’s Fine Art on February 16. Her numerous London solo shows have included exhibitions at Albemarle Gallery and Oakham Contemporary (now Panter & Hall).

2. Walter Balmer Hislop (1886-1915) trained at the Edinburgh College of Art and painted portraits of Edinburgh and East Lothian scenes, like this signed 5½ x 7½in (14 x 19cm) oil that sold for nearly double its top guide at Ramsay Cornish on February 23. Bishop served with the Royal Scots during the First World War and was killed at Gallipoli in 1915.

3. This 18th century oil on canvas sold just shy of its top estimate at Doncaster saleroom Wilkinson’s. In a 3ft 5in x 2ft 9in (1.05m x 84cm) black ripple moulded frame, the portrait bears a heraldic crest above the inscription Reÿner Van Herck Æt Ao cum medio 1728.
