1. This 15 x 17in (38 x 44cm) watercolour view of the south face of Cliveden House by Gabriele Carelli (1820-1900) tipped over top estimate at Olympia Auctions in West Kensington on April 17. A well-connected artist, his patrons included the Emperor of Russia, Queen Victoria and Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, who owned Cliveden House from 1868-93.
2. This pen and ink drawing titled French Getting Out of It! is by George du Maurier (1834-96), a French-born author and cartoonist who became a successful illustrator at Punch and coined the expression ‘bedside manner’ in a satirical cartoon. The 14 x 10in (35 x 25cm) drawing, dated 1887, was part of over 300 lots relating to his granddaughter, the novelist Daphne du Maurier, at Rowley’s of Ely in Cambridgeshire on April 27.
3. Three interior scenes by Suffolk School painter Barbara Gilligan (British 1913-95), including this 12 x 14in (30 x 35cm) oil on canvas dated 1947, all found buyers above their guides in a sale of Modern and Contemporary art at Ewbank’s of Surrey on April 25. Gilligan studied with Cedric Morris and Arthur Lett-Haines at the East Anglian School of Painting in Benton End.
