This painting by Laura Knight (1877-1970) was purchased by the vendor’s father from Knight’s retrospective exhibition held at the Royal Academy in 1965, and will be offered by Busby in Bridport, Dorset, in its Fine Art and Antiques auction on May 16.

The Bathing Pool, an 18in x 2ft 2in (45 x 66cm) gouache on paper, dated 1912, was picture number 84 in the original exhibition catalogue and comes with a letter from Knight to the vendor’s father thanking him for the offer to buy it and saying she would be ‘pleased’ to sell for £50.

The scene of bathers in a granite rock pool exposed by the low tide is almost certainly Lamorna, just west of Penzance, where Knight frequently painted her nude compositions among its rocky formations from 1907 onwards.

Estimate £40,000-50,000.
