Perhaps the most unusual recent visitor to the regional salerooms was a porcelain bowl among a number of pieces by the Australian potter Gwyn Hanssen Pigott (1935-2013), offered at Chorley’s in Cheltenham on October 15.

Exhibited at Galerie Besson, London, in 1992, the 8¼in (21cm) diameter bowl ( was estimated in line with recent market prices at £300-400.

”Two online bidders locked horns, fighting it out from £280 all the way to the final hammer price of £3000,” said auctioneer Catrin Hampton. “It seems this Australian ceramicist is a name to watch.”
