Back in 1984 the Royal Doulton factory was planning to issue a Clark Gable character jug as part of a celebrity-themed collection. When the movie star’s estate refused permission for the likeness to be used it was quickly pulled from production prior to mainstream distribution.
Now a collecting rarity, this example (numbered D6709) above offered at Potteries Auctions, Stoke-on-Trent, on November 8-10 carries an estimate of £500-1000.
This 8in (21cm) porcelain sang de boeuf vase with café-au-lait glazed base, above, has a Qianlong mark to the base and is possibly of the period. It carries hopes of £300-500 at Trevanion & Dean in Whitchurch, Shropshire, on November 9.

This framed document, a petition ‘to remove from threat of arrest the widow Joan Head’, bears the signature of Oliver Cromwell and six others.
According to the text, the Head of Staverton, Northampton, had been “a man of good religious conversation… very hearty in the parliaments service” who had fought at Stratton and Dartmouth where he received a mortal wound. He died three months later having paid only 10 shillings towards a £3 debt owed to the surgeon who had tried to save him. Cromwell has written Release Mrs Head [from the debt] above his signature.
The rare document, in the owner’s family for many years, is pitched at £600-1000 at the Brightwells Autumn Fine Art Sale in Leominster on November 13-14.
Collector and dealer Robert Seymour of Colchester Fine Art is conducting something of a retirement sale at local auction house Mander of Newton Green, Sudbury, on November 9.
His contribution to the sale includes a range of paintings, etchings, antique maps and engravings including a 7 x 10in (18 x 26cm) oil on panel rural landscape with a horse and cart by Patrick Nasmyth (1787-1831).
Estimate £400-600.

Many of the items come from an unnamed coastal estate. These include textiles and ephemera from an Edwardian visit to the Far East such as this photograph album above, c.1900, showing scenes in Peking, Tong-Ku, Lanfang, Soochow, Shaghai and Tientsin.
