1. This 13½ x 7in (34 x 18cm) sketch in blue chalk by Félix Vallotton (1865-1925), purchased at Gallerie Paul Prouté in the early 1970s, tipped over top estimate at Olympia Auctions on October 23 in west London. The female nude was a common subject for Vallotton, while he also painted landscapes and still-lifes. He was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut.
2. This continental river scene is typical of the watercolours of John Varley (1778-1842), a founder member of the Society of Painters in Watercolours who was a close friend of William Blake. In ‘foxed condition’, the 10 x 14in (24 x 35cm) work was offered with a conservative estimate of £40-60 at The Cotswold Auction Company on October 22.
3. A well-known figure on the Welsh art scene, Claudia Williams (b.1933) paints the domestic world of children and grandchildren, family gatherings and seaside trips. This typical signed 2ft 7in x 2ft 1in (80 x 64cm) oil on canvas, Regarde Les Oiseaux, sold at Martin & Pole.
