This design for this 10in (26cm) silvered electrotype medallion above by Elkington & Co comes from one of the panels of the so-called Milton Shield, designed by the French goldsmith and sculptor Léonard Morel-Ladeuil (1820-88), for the Paris international exhibition of 1867. The panel depicts an angel expelling Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
The estimate is £400-500 at the December 4-5 sale of Coins, Tokens and Historical Medals held by Dix Noonan Webb in London.
This image above is one of two similar half-plate ambrotypes taken by James Francis Magee (1834-1903), owner of a successful business supplying photographic chemicals, of his farm in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania c.1860. They show the Magee family posed outside the front and back of the family house.
At Flints’ sale in Reading on November 29 the pair, housed in a typical embossed leather double case, carries an estimate of £100-150.
Newcastle-upon-Tyne numismatic and philately specialist Corbitts conducts a sale of Coins, Medals and Banknotes on November 28-29.
Among a number of tickets and passes is a rare mother of pearl ‘Free Ticket’ for the Midland Railway, c.1850. The oval pass is engraved with a wyvern emblem and is named for Mr W Watson.
Estimate £150-200.
This Dutch delft dish above, painted in puce, yellow and green, was made c.1690, around the time that William of Orange (1650-1702), the stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, became king of England, Ireland and Scotland.
A portrait of William is flanked by the initials KW and a border of stylised tulips.
The 8½in (21cm) dish carries an estimate of £200-400 at Great Western Auctions in Glasgow on November 29-30.
This pair of Frederick Freed Ltd ballet shoes above was worn by Margot Fonteyn (1919-91) during a performance of Swan Lake in 1968.
The shoes come in their original box which is addressed to Miss Fonteyn, The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, London and both are autographed to the toe and dated.
Fonteyn appeared in Swan Lake four times in 1968 between February 12-April 8.
They pair comes for sale at East Bristol Auctions on November 29 with an estimate of £300-500.
