1. Walter Shaw (1851-1933) lived and worked at Salcombe, Devon, for much of his life, specialising in coastal and marine subjects which he painted across much of the south-west. This typical scene, a signed 21in x 3ft 4in (53cm x 1.01m) oil on canvas titled A Rocky Coastal Scene with Breaking Waves, sold at John Nicholson’s on September 4 to a buyer whose grandmother was a cousin of the artist.
2. Michael Angelo Rooker (1743-1801), was among the more industrious watercolour topographers of the 18th century. This small 6 x 8½in (16 x 21.5cm) pencil and grey wash of the turreted south gate at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk sold above its £120-180 guide at Shrewsbury saleroom Halls on September 18.
3. This 2ft x 2ft 11in (60 x 90cm) oil on canvas, attributed to the English landscapist Alfred East (1849-1913) sold on top estimate at Clevedon Salerooms in Bristol on September 12. The canvas dates to 1883 – the year East became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and where he would later be elected to full membership.
