A feature of the market in recent years has been the welcome focus on female artists. Barbara Regina Deitzch (1706-83), born into an artistic family in Nuremberg, specialised in watercolour and gouache paintings of animals and plants, and the engraving of copper plates for prints.
At the time her work was in demand internationally and exported to the Netherlands and England but her pictures are not often seen at auction.
A rare set of four gouache on paper still-lifes of flowers and butterflies, each 11 x 8in (28 x 20cm), comes for sale from a private collection in Scotland with hopes of £8000-12,000.
It forms part of The Classic Tradition: European Art from 15th to 19th Centuries, a new London auction of traditional paintings and sculpture held in the heart of St James’s by Lyon & Turnbull on October 30. Head of sale Rohan McCulloch, who joined L&T earlier this year, has put together a select auction of 83 works for the inaugural event at 10-11 Carlton House Terrace.

Dated to c.600-700AD, the height of the Merovingian period, this gold and garnet finger ring above comes for sale at Pax Romana Auctions in London on October 27 from ‘an important London collection of ancient art formed in 1970s then passed by descent’.

This 11 x 18in (27 x 46cm) 18th century watercolour view of Eton College seen from across the Thames, above, is by Thomas Sandby (1721-98).
It comes for sale at Chiswick Auctions in west London on October 29 from the collection of Peter Lawrence (1913-2005), a former master at Eton College. As well as collecting views of Eton, he was the founder of the Museum of Eton Life and author and editor of many articles covering life at the school to the end of the Victorian age.
