The 18 x 15 in (46 x 38cm) unsigned oil in an 18th century period frame was examined in person by the late Edgar Munhall, curator Frick Collection, in 2011.

In a written report (that will accompany the lot) he stated that, in his opinion, the Portrait of a Young Man was painted by Greuze c.1800.

This makes it a painting of the artist’s later career when he primarily devoted himself to portrait painting rather than genre studies.

The work, previously in the collection of Stanley Newbold Barbee, in Los Angeles who purchased it from Felix Goulêd, New York in 1937, was last under the hammer in the same auction rooms in 2012. The painting has an estimate of $15,000- 25,000.
