ATG LETTER: Charles Selby - estate called Yearle not farm named Earl

Charles Selby’s estate (not a ‘farm’) was called Yearle (not ‘Earl’), near Wooler, Northumberland. The presentation of the cup is recorded in the earliest Burke, as stated, but the right provenance reference is to Burke’s Landed Gentry, 1898 Edn, SELBY of Yearle. This was the family’s final appearance in the series, and there we read that the last owner, Charles Selby, JP, died in 1885, without issue.

Selby’s widow, Julie, survived him at Yearle until 1898, and the estate appears to have been sold shortly after that. Perhaps that is when the silver cup and the portrait left the immediate family.

I wonder if Yearle still stands?
