The Poster Auctions International (20% buyer’s premium) sale in New York on November 15 included some examples of inter-war British posters promoting rail travel to coastal resorts by LNER that were stylish examples of Art Deco-era graphic design.
William H Barribal’s 4ft 1in x 3ft 3in (1.25 x 1m) poster from 1925 promoting the Jazz Age attractions of Bridlington in Yorkshire was printed by John Waddington of Leeds.
Barribal was a commercial artist and his wife Gertrude Louisa Fanny Pitt served as the model for many designs including this example. It sold for $6500 (£5000) against an estimate of $8000-10,000.

Moonlight Bathing on the East Coast is a rare and striking image designed by Polish-born G Stanislaus Brien, who created posters for the London Underground and Shell as well as the LNER. This 4ft 2in x 3ft 4in (1.27 x 1m) example, printed by S C Allen & Co of London, sold for $6000 (£4615).
