This Sèvres coffee can and saucer (gobelet litron et soucoupe) above, c.1780-85, is decorated in puce camaieu with a depiction of the death of Cleopatra and vignettes of instruments, trophies and flowers. It carries the factory marks and blue LG painter's marks for Étienne-Charles Leguay.

A near-identical painting of Cleopatra by the same artist appears on an egg cup in the Louis XVI service at Buckingham Palace, while the Victoria and Albert Museum has a can and saucer from the same service, depicting the rape of Proserpina.

This pair (a section of the saucer is broken and restuck) was purchased from London dealership E&H Manners in 1988 by Judith Howard, a former curator at the V&A, whose collection of Sèvres and Vincennes comes for sale at Woolley & Wallis in Salisbury on February 4. It carries an estimate of £1000-1500.
