The signed 2ft 1in x 20in (64 x 52cm) oil on board, estimated at £400-600 in a January 21 sale at Bellmans (22% buyer’s premium) in Sussex, was painted in 1916 during an exploratory time in the artist’s career when he was experimenting with pointillism, fauvism and Les Nabis techniques.

Formerly in a Japanese private collection in Kyoto, it sold for £4000 to the UK trade.

From the same American vendor, a well-preserved 2ft 3in x 2ft 11in (71 x 90cm) Dutch port scene at sunset by the Lyon-based French artist Jacques Truphemus (b.1922) more than doubled hopes to sell for £3100.
