Garvine Bank by William Mitchell – £6200 at Mitchells.
Offered on November 27, the 21in x 2ft 11in (54 x 90cm) oil on canvas, signed and dated 1895, depicts ‘The Old Garvine Bank and Bridge’ in Maryport as Mitchell had remembered it in the year 1839.
The thriving 19th century harbour was a popular subject for the artist, with this example selling within estimate for £6200.
Mitchell is considered one of the most talented of Cumbria’s latter-day marine artists with a decent local following on the secondary market. In November 2015, Mitchells sold a similar work for £8000.
