This striking retro brooch fashioned in 18 carat gold, diamonds and emeralds as the head of a roaring lion was made by Georges Lenfant for Van Cleef & Arpels. Although signed to the detachable brooch clip fitting for VCA, the French assay marks are for Lenfant.
A brooch of the same design sold for $38,000 at Sotheby’s New York in 2017.
This one, offered by Elmwood’s (25% buyer’s premium) in Notting Hill, London on May 21, went comfortably within estimate at £26,000 to a private collector.
