Among the highlights at the event, which continues until July 10, is a Roman marble funerary altar inscribed for a mother and her son. Offered by Mayfair dealership Daniel Katz for £215,000, it dates to the 1st century AD and has a provenance back to the Mellini Collection of the early 16th century.
Like many of the London businesses taking part in this summer’s LAW, Katz is both open by appointment and showing on the new virtual platform.

On the website, galleries show works individually as well as exhibiting in themed ‘viewing rooms’. The altar, for example, is visible in a ‘room’ dedicated to ancient and medieval art. Other areas include those devoted to highlights – one from each dealer – and works priced less than £30,000. The Katz gallery joined others, such as Colnaghi, reporting lively interest from the viewing room preview. More enquiries were made direct to the galleries or their websites.
LAW is one of the few recent art world events to have any physical presence following months of lockdown.
Since exhibitions are held in galleries around Mayfair and St James’s, most local dealerships have been able to take part with the appropriate precautions. More than 50 dealers and auction house are involved, many online only from overseas.
