Included among the paintings is this portrait of 2nd Lieutenant Arthur Cedric Foster, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, painted by George Percy Jacomb-Hood (1857-1929).

The sitter, raised at the family seat, Brockhampton Court, Hereford, was a star athlete at Eton and Exeter College, Oxford. He entered the Diplomatic Service in February 1914 and enlisted on September 18.

Arriving in France on January 12, 1915, he was wounded at Neuville-Chappelle on March 11 and died in Merville Hospital the next day.

This oil on canvas portrait, which is signed lower left and dated 1915, was painted from a photo taken before his departure.

It is housed in a carved and reticulated gilt frame measuring 4ft 1in x 3ft 4in (1.24 x 1m) and has an estimate of $1000-1500.
