This oil above by William Sadler II (c.1782-1839) is titled The Embarkation of King George IV at Kingstown, September 3, 1821.
This was the first visit of a British monarch to Ireland since William III had landed, in very different circumstances, at Carrickfergus 130 years earlier. The brief stay was perceived to have been a success – despite the king’s best efforts. He arrived drunk and suspicions persisted that the main purpose of his trip was to spend time with his mistress, Lady Conyngham, at Slane Castle.
The 3ft 4in x 2ft 2in (1.03 x 65cm) oil carries an estimate of €12,000-18,000 at Whyte’s sale of Irish & International Art in Dublin on March 9.

The British & International Pictures sale at McTear’s in Glasgow on March 11 includes a tiny oil by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919).
Etude de Têtes, just 3½ x 2½in (8.5 x 6cm), dates from 1898. Sold at auction twice in the 1980s, it will be included in the artist’s online catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by the Wildenstein Plattner Institute.
Estimate £15,000-25,000.
