Die Plünderung nach der Schlacht (The looting after the battle), a 2ft x 3ft 9in (60cm x 1.14m) panel, which is coming up for sale at Karl & Faber in Munich on November 14, is a typical example of his art.
It encompasses numerous episodes from the aftermath of a bloody battle, overseen by a field commander on his dappled horse and his entourage at the right of the composition.
The Munich auction heralds the first market appearance of the painting in over 50 years: since the late 1960s, it has been part of a north German collection. It is now expected to bring €40,000-60,000.
