All these attributes are captured in this bronze relief portrait of her, which is estimated at €300-500 in Mullen’s Collector’s Cabinet auction on December 5 (rearranged from October 31) in Bray, Co Dublin.
The auction house says: “We are used to seeing her in photographs and in Sarah Purser’s portrait (which Gonne hated) but we can find no record of this bronze portrait, signed F. Lernac and dated 1901.”

Hand-written in blue ink and drawn on Messrs Coutts & Company for the sum of £5, it is payable to The Royal Hotel, Plymouth. The cheque is dated September 28, 1868. At this time Dickens had returned from his profitable ‘farewell reading’ tour of the US and was touring England. A black cross suggested it was possibly cancelled.
The cheque was inherited by the seller from the estate of Marian Hilton whose sister Dorothy was given it sometime before the First World War – perhaps by Dickens’ granddaughter

Cardiff saleroom Rogers Jones is holding a themed Welsh Sale on December 5. There are 58 lots of local pottery, much of it from a west Wales estate.
One of the highlights is this Ynysmeudwy baptism basin, c.1850, estimated at £500-1000. It has an interior including plaques inscribed Baptising basin for Pantteg Chapel presented by Mary Griffiths.
It is believed that local industrialists commissioned such bowls and that Griffiths would have been a benefactor to the chapel, located just three miles from the Ynysmeudwy factory

Measuring 9ft high x 4ft 11in wide (2.76 x 1.5m) overall, it incorporates a mid 18th century oil on canvas depicting musicians and dancing children in a parkland setting. The estimate is £6000- 8000.
The vendor is directly descended from Johann Jacob Moser (1701-85), a jurist considered to have laid the legal foundations of the modern German state. The mirror was brought from Germany to London by the vendor’s mother c.1960.

This Army & Navy travelling stationery box, 1904, which has come from descendants of the original owner, is estimated at £300-500 in Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s December 3 auction in Taunton.
With a gilt metal carrying handle to each side, the box has a Bramah-type lock and key, the top opening to reveal a satinwood lined interior, stationery rack and compartments housing blotter, letter book, cash account and diary, above three drawers and a spring-loaded drawer fitted with pair of travelling inkwells.
The fall front opens to reveal a gilt-tooled, leather-lined writing surface, complete with ivorine Army & Navy ticket for Captain (later Colonel) PD McCandlish. The box measures 17in wide x 10in wide x 12in deep (43 x 25 x 30cm).
A Victorian travel desk presented to a military surveyor by Lord Kitchener is guided at £1500-2500 in a timed online sale held by Cumbrian firm 1818 Auctioneers which ends on November 29.
The 16in wide x 8in high x 10in deep (41 x 20 x 26cm) deep wooden desk, with hinged lid, is accompanied by a large quantity of ephemera charting the career and life of Sgt Major Angus Sutherland of the Royal Engineers.
It is being offered for sale by his great-granddaughter who lives in Kendal.
Sgt Major Sutherland’s job was to survey land in the late 1800s that was part of the British Empire. He probably received the box at the end of a six-year period in Cyprus in 1886. Kitchener was in charge of the work there. Inscribed on the lid is Sergeant Major A Sutherland RE from Lieut Colonel Kitchener RE Palestine – Cyprus.
Signed, hand-written letters from Kitchener and the signed photograph also shown above, are among the items in the desk.

Simple ribbons to secure hats gave way to grand pins by Victorian times, and come the Edwardian era the hatpin was enjoying its heyday. On offer at Canterbury Auction Galleries on November 28-30 is the Buckingham Collection: one member of the Hat Pin Society of Great Britain’s 45-year quest to create a collection representing some of the best. They will be sold in groups across 18 lots.
One of the most prolific manufacturers of the day was the Horner family of Halifax in Yorkshire. Examples of Horner’s pins in the collection on offer are some of the most sought after, notably a pair of Edward VII so-called ‘Game’ pins shown here, the silver heads modelled respectively as a miniature diablo and a ball and rocket, or bilboquet. Assayed in Chester in 1907 and contained in their original maroon leather-covered box, they are estimated at £100-150.

This Cartier silver, gold and onyx mounted desk clock, perpetual calendar and weather station was given as personal gift by Henry Mond, the 2nd Baron Melchett (1898-1949), to his long-time personal assistant PW Cushion after 45 years’ service.
Measuring 4½in (11.5cm) high, it has import marks for London 1912. The clock comes for sale by descent at Dreweatts in Donnington Priory, Newbury, on December 8 with a guide of £2500-3500.
