Starting with the New York series in May, the sales will be titled ‘20th Century Art’ and ‘21st Century Art’.

According to Christie’s, “removing art from the context of its assigned movements” reflects the “evolving market demand and the collecting habits of our clients, and will allow for a more dynamic approach to serving the marketplace”.

The development follows the announcement back in June last year that Christie’s was merging its Impressionist and Modern Art department and the Post-War and Contemporary Art department.
