The family firm, which has been auctioneering in the county for seven generations since 1864, has taken on the lease of the former Arts Centre in Church Street.

Richard Winterton, who already runs The Lichfield Auction Centre in Staffordshire, said: “We have a lot of regular clients in the Tamworth area and they too are delighted. To be able to work from such a historic building is a great honour.”

The Grade II-listed building has been a theatre, malt house, Baptist church and a council-run music and arts centre. It was most recently the county council’s register office until it vacated the building last year.

The 3700 sq ft building will accommodate new salerooms for live specialist auctions and will be open to the public daily for free valuations.

The Winterton family’s auctioneering heritage began at the Smithfield livestock market in Lichfield which was linked with agricultural auctions in Tamworth.

Earlier this year the firm expanded its saleroom at The Lichfield Auction Centre in Fradley Park, making space externally for outdoor items and expanding its salerooms inside as well as updating its driveway and car park.
