Alan Stone of Squirrels Antiques in Basingstoke adds: “We are the only antiques shop in the town which means we are not on any regular trade routes.”

The business started as a partnership in 1981 as a hobby business but it is now just Stone as sole owner.

“Antique and vintage jewellery does well at Squirrels – our bread and butter really – plus it’s a bit of man cave with militaria and so forth,” says Stone, who collects Burmantofts pottery and anything on pre-1970 Basingstoke.

Many longstanding customers visited the shop to celebrate its 40 years, as well as the mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Cllr Onnalee Cubitt, who said: “Squirrels is one of the longest-lasting shops in the town and it’s lovely to come down and support it.”
