A Yorkshire View is the title of a single-owner sale of paintings, principally of Yorkshire, that comes for auction at Tennants on March 6.
The pictures are just a part of the collection built up over nearly 50 years from the 1920s to the 1960s by George G Hopkinson, a director of both the West Riding textile company Hopkinson and Shore, and Bradford fashion house Novello’s.
He was a de facto patron as well as a friend to many of the Yorkshire-based artists whose paintings he collected such as Fred Lawson, Philip Naviasky, Fred Cecil Jones and Jacob Kramer.
Bradford-born Cecil Jones (1891-1966) is known for his closely observed and detailed paintings of northern towns, such as this view of Scarborough, painted in 1950. Estimate £2000-3000.

'Seven Sisters of Kintail' by Allen Freer - estimate £200-300 at Chiswick Auctions on February 25.
On February 25 Chiswick Auctions will conduct a sale titled The Delighted Eye Part II comprising 20th century art and furnishings from the collection of Allen and Beryl Freer. Christie’s sold the core works from the collection last year.
The Freers filled their detached 1960s home in a suburb south of Manchester with pictures. Daughter Dr Catharine Davies recalls: “There were no empty spaces — pictures were even hung on the sides of bookcases and beside windows. Having a mirror or a cupboard was much more of an issue growing up — that meant a challenge to much-needed wall space.”
Much of the collection was assembled on a modest budget. “‘Don’t run two cars’ would be my mother’s tip for financing a collection,” said Davies.
The sale comprises more than 250 artworks plus over 50 pieces of ceramics and furniture and more than 200 books. Estimates range from £100-2000 with many lots offered without reserve.
Allen, a teacher throughout his life, and by turns a publisher, patron, curator, writer, editor and craftsman, was himself an accomplished watercolourist, often using his work to illustrate his poetry and prose. More than 10 of his own paintings are included in the auction such as Seven Sisters of Kintail, 9 x 13in (23 x 32cm), estimated at £200-300 (pictured top).

An early issue Queen’s Gallantry Medal is expected to reach £10,000-12,000 at Elstob & Elstob’s Fine Art and Antiques sale in Ripon on February 20.
The QGM was instituted on June 20, 1974, to replace the Order of the British Empire for Gallantry and the British Empire Medal for Gallantry and was intended for non-military acts of bravery or military acts in situations where the country was not officially ‘at war’.
Acting Flight Sergeant William Barker Oldroyd’s medal was awarded jointly with his commanding officer, Acting Squadron Leader RA Chasemore, for their actions during the Cyprus emergency on July 21, 1974.
The pair dealt with a fire next to a petrol store at Nicosia International Airport while under fire from Turkish aircraft. It comes with a portfolio containing original correspondence, press photographs and cuttings, together with all investiture documentation.

This pair of Victorian Irish silver wine ewers with naturalistic fruiting vine decoration have marks for James Fray of Dublin.
The ewers, each standing 12in (30cm) high with a total weight of around 70oz, are expected to bring €1500-2000 as part of the At Home Online Only auction held by Adam’s in Dublin on February 23. Both have an engraved crest of a wild boar’s head pierced by an arrow.

Cumbrian firm 1818 Auctioneers offers a series of pen and ink sketches by Alfred Wainwright (1907-91) in an online sale closing on February 21.
Two Welsh scenes have been consigned by Jenny Dereham, Wainwright’s publisher during the last 10 years of his life. One depicts Llaneilian Church on Anglesey, with its famous pyramidal spire, which appeared in Wainwright’s The North Wales Sketchbook. The other, pictured here, shows St Govan’s Chapel, perched on the cliffs of St Govan’s Head in Pembrokeshire, from The South Wales Sketchbook.
They have guides of £300-500 apiece.
Dereham met Wainwright at the London office of Michael Joseph after suggesting a collaboration with photographer Derry Brabbs. It led to a bestselling series of eight large-format books including the 1987 Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk and a book launch that occasioned only Wainwright’s third visit to the capital (see photo above).
