The artist, Wilhelm Morgner, was to die at the front in 1917, aged only 25.

He had close connections to avant-garde artists in Berlin, Cologne and Munich, where he participated at the exhibitions of the Blaue Reiter alongside Kandinsky and Franz Marc. He was also clearly influenced by Van Gogh.

In a sale on July 14-15 in Munich Karl & Faber is offering the painting, which was purchased from the artist’s mother in the 1940s and has remained in the same family ever since. Estimate €100,000-150,000.
