Twelve eggs, each to a unique design, were hidden in caskets at secret locations across the UK, with clues to their whereabouts included in the book Conundrum, The Cadbury’s Creme Egg Mystery by Don Shaw.
This particular egg, weighing 323.6gm (giving it a current bullion value of around £12,000), was awarded to a Cadbury’s retailer after a prize draw. The decoration is based on the front cover of Shaw’s book and incorporates elements of each Conundrum riddle.
It was first offered by Batemans (20% buyer’s premium) of Stamford on behalf of the original recipients in July 2017 when it sold for £17,200 (£20,640 including premium).
The family of the buyer, who has since died, chose to reoffer it at the Lincolnshire saleroom on February 19 as part of Batemans’ specialist quarterly jewellery sale with a guide of £15,000-20,000.
In fact, it sold to an online bidder for a new house record at £31,000.
