This year the gallery focuses on five potters who were instrumental to the new wave of ceramics that emerged from the Royal College of Art in the 1970s.
Creative freedom and an ‘anything goes attitude’ defined this time at the Royal College and an influential group of students radically challenged and deconstructed notions of ceramics, particularly functional pottery.
More than 30 works, many created recently, are offered online until April 4 by Magdalene Odundo (b.1950), Alison Britton (b.1948), Carol McNicoll (b.1943), Martin Smith (1950) and Stephen Dixon (b.1957).
Paul Greenhalgh, director of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, whose new book Ceramic, Art and Civilisation was published in December, has curated the show. Prices range from £385 for a Stephen Dixon plate to £19,850 for a large wall piece by Martin Smith, with most works priced between £2000-8000.
Wider focus
The show forms part of a wider focus on Modern and Contemporary potters at Messums Wiltshire this spring.
An exhibition of works by Korean ceramicists Ree Soo-Jong and Lee Hun Chung is scheduled to open on April 14.
Moon jars by Soo-Jong and large-scale ceramic sculptural forms by Chung are for sale with prices from £6500-36,000.
Also opening on April 14 are two small solo shows dedicated to the geometric black and white vessels of Nordic-born potter Bjork Haraldsdottir and the bold hand-painted amphoras of Kitty Shepherd. Prices here start from £180.
