The the eldest and most successful of the four artists known as the Scottish Colourists, along with Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, John Duncan Fergusson and George Leslie Hunter, he remains at the summit of the market for 20th century Scottish pictures.

The auction coincides with the Edinburgh saleroom appointing Alice Strang as a senior specialist in Modern & Contemporary art. She was previously a museum curator who helped organise the 2012 Peploe retrospective at the National Galleries of Scotland.

Among the consignments already announced for the December auction is Comrie, Perthshire, a landscape with a church spire from 1916 which is estimated at £40,000-60,000.

A later work from 1949 tilted The Statuette is pitched at £150,000-200,000. The signed oil on canvas (pictured above) was exhibited at a Royal Scottish Academy show dedicated to Peploe, Cadell and Hunter in the year it was painted.
