With his fellow members of the artists’ group Nouveau Realisme, which he joined at its inception in 1960, he rejected the beauty of art and drew his raw materials from detritus of civilization.

In Villeglé’s case these were the posters he encountered on his walks through Paris and other cities which he tore down and combined in new ways to create his works of art. He made his decollages, using several layers of torn or lacerated posters, mounted on canvas to create seemingly spontaneous compositions.

On October 30, Lehr in Berlin is selling the 3ft 1in x 2ft 6in (93 x 76cm) decollage Avenue Genghis Khan, signed and dated dimanche 23 mai 1965 on the rear. The Cologne collector who consigned it for sale is hoping to receive at least €25,000.
