Gangooly belonged to the extended Tagore family in Calcutta and, like many of his class of affluent gentlemen artists, was a product of formal private art training at home. He founded the Indian Society of Oriental Art, Calcutta, in 1907.

Landscapes and riverscapes became his chosen genre (as the painter of nearly 100 oils of the sun setting on the river Padma, he earned the sobriquet ‘Painter of Padma’) with the Himalayas also a favourite subject.

Adam's is participating in Asian Art in London.
